TCM Neighborhood Guide: Brentwood

Pressed Juicery Brentwood

The very first Pressed Juicery location is in Brentwood. Just a tiny walk-up doorway in the fountain courtyard of Brentwood Town Center. Who knew this tiny location would spark a West Coast juice revolution. A hidden gem that draws in-the-know juice-lovers from all over the westside, as well as yogis running in and out of Maha Yoga.

Must-have: Greens 3! The best green juice we’ve ever tasted.

VISIT PRESSED JUICERY

Brentwood Country Mart

This charming big red barn with plenty of outdoor spaces serves as the heart of Brentwood life. Locals rely on the Mart for its well-curated mix of incredible shopping and time-tested restaurants, including the outdoor courtyard filled with a handful of casual restaurants, some of which have been at the Mart for over thirty years.

Must-have: So many of our fave Brentwood shops are here! Not to be missed: Botany’s gorgeous flower shop and Poppy boutique for child-size Levi’s and Petit Bateau.

VISIT THE COUNTRY MART

Farm Shop

Farm Shop gives us the perfect mix of small-town feel and big-city style. The restaurant has a friendly, local vibe and incredible farm-fresh food. The shop is stocked with cheese, chocolate, wines, kitchen goods and a takeaway counter we dream of making our only grocery store!

Must-have: The avocado hummus and market vegetable salad should not be missed. Order the salad if only for the Drake family farm goat cheese toast that accompanies it.

VISIT FARM SHOP

Cote

One of our newest neighbors, Cote, is quickly becoming a go-to part of our beauty routine. Stocked floor to ceiling with their own brand of 5-free non-toxic polishes, Cote’s luxurious, beach-vibe salon is the perfect setting for a weekend girlfriend gathering or quick touch-up without all the toxic fumes.

Must-have: The ‘luxe’ mani-pedi with Cote’s polish No. 98 – a dark chalkboard-colored grey, of course!

VISIT COTE

Brentwood Farmer's Market

Brentwood’s Sunday farmer’s market brings together some of the best Southern California farmers and artisans to meet all our weekend needs in one: lazy strolling, a lush green setting, fresh produce and fun local finds…maybe even a good celebrity-sighting or two. We’re farmer’s market fanatics. Nothing makes eating our veggies quite as fun as gathering them straight from the farmer who grew them.

Must-have: Don’t leave the market without finding Coco Bakes and her gourmet, gluten-free cookies or teacakes. Every week, Coco thrills us with some of the best gluten-free cookies we’ve ever tried.

VISIT THE FARMER’S MARKET

Sugar Paper

Chelsea and Jamie’s little paper empire has stolen the hearts of stationery lovers around the world. Their charming shop inside the country mart is their only stand-alone location and a shrine for those obsessed with their traditional and sweet designs.

Must-have: Sugar Paper’s custom letterpress pieces are printed on antique presses. Touring their studio, we spotted more than a few custom orders printed with famously stylish names.

VISIT SUGAR PAPER

diesel, a bookstore

There’s little that feels as grounding to us as a great bookstore. And Diesel is one of the best. Buying local is never more rewarding than when browsing inside a cozy shop like this one, stuffed to the brim with great reads, and we’re not sure there’s a better public art-immersion experience than browsing through their over-stuffed shelves full of cover art old and new.

Must-have: Diesel’s online bestseller’s list is a great reading list – an insightful look at what true book-lovers are reading this year.

VISIT DIESEL BOOKSTORE

Tavern

Suzanne Goin’s white tented dining room is a timeless treasure we never tire of. From the old-fashioned larder up front, to the dark and stylish bar, all the way back to the light-washed dining room, Tavern is a delicious experience. Sit in the larder for a cozy coffee meeting, linger in the white-tented dining room for an ultra-California dining experience.

Must-have: Begin with a decadent cheese plate, order just about anything, then end with pastry chef, Christian Olufson’s ricotta fritters.

VISIT TAVERN

sweet rose creamery

Small batches of seasonally-flavored, organic ice cream with local farm-sourced ingredients. That’s all you need to know about our favorite weekend indulgence. Sweet Rose Creamery is the real deal, serving up irresistible flavors from the old-fashioned to the avant garde, all freshly-made and additive-free.

Must-have: The menu changes monthly, so watch for seasonal flavors. Try the always-available fresh mint chip and be ruined for ordinary ice cream for life.

VISIT SWEET ROSE CREAMERY

Star Toys

For over 45 years, Star Toys has been the premier destination for Brentwood’s girls and boys. Tucked away on Barrington Place, this small shop beats out a trip to Disneyland. We can personally attest to this, since some of us grew up scavenging the toy shop’s aisles!

Must-have: Madame Alexander dolls, science experiments galore, and all the classic games you grew up loving.

VISIT STAR TOYS

Jenni Kayne

Designer Jenni Kayne’s Brentwood boutique is an experience. Not only does she carry her own namesake line of lovely and timeless pieces, but her selection of leather goods, jewelry, and the space itself is instructive to those of us with a passion for great design. The fascinating, yet simple selection of season-specific baubles, like glass bottles in summer and wooden ornaments at the holidays makes this a must-visit every time we’re in the neighborhood.

Must-have: No girl’s closest is complete without a pair of Jenni’s D’Orsay flats. We love them in tan oiled leather or white raffia.

VISIT JENNI KAYNE

Caffe Luxxe

Whitewashed wood walls, precious-feeling pastries, and straight-forward, delicious espresso are why this shop is one of the best coffee dates in town. We’ve been known to brave the midday traffic and hit up Caffe Luxxe for an afternoon pick-me-up at least once a week, even when with a slew of other coffee shops right outside our door. Their artisinal, perfectly-brewed coffee is that good.

Must-have: Go for the classic foam art, stay for the people watching and delightful shop items, vintage stamps to Savon De Marseille soaps.

VISIT CAFFE LUXXE

Market

Especially when it comes to everyday wear, independent shops like Market are increasingly rare. Thanks to lively owner Jenn Jones, a visit to Market is like shopping in your BFF’s closest and stocked with perfect daily wears.

Must-have: Market’s shelves are stocked with more striped short and long-sleeved t-shirts than in all our editors’ closets combined, if that’s possible. Find the perfect one!

VISIT MARKET

San Vicente + The Santa Monica Stairs

We love to run the green stretch of San Vicente Blvd. through the heart of Brentwood. Even a drive on this stretch of lush roadway will make you feel more fit by osmosis – the tree-lined median never fails to be filled with runners in tip-top condition. Take your jog all the way to the cliffs of the Pacific Palisades and climb the famously narrow Santa Monica Stairs. There’s no better natural workout on the Westside.

Must-have: End your cardio with a stop at Pressed Juicery for Coconut h2o, the perfect post-run hydration.

VISIT THE STAIRS

Maha Yoga

Green juice got you craving some yoga flow? Just look up – literally. Nestled above Pressed Juicery Brentwood is Maha Yoga, LA’s hottest yoga hub. Filled with natural sunlight, rockin’ music and serious yogis, Maha (which means “great” or “supreme”) is the ultimate LA yoga experience.

Must-have: Pop into founder Steve Ross’ packed class with a Pressed Juicery Chlorophyll H2O for a fun flow that will leave you euphoric all day.

VISIT MAHA YOGA

Paige Denim

One of just a handful of stand-alone shops, Paige Denim’s Barrington Court location is a Chalkboard fave. Paige’s dreamy fits and zipper-heavy styles are a staple in our denim-heavy wardrobes. Paige’s founder, literally Paige herself, is the only female founder in premium denim – we kind of love that. Their denim duds are all made here in the U.S.of A.

Must-have: We love the slouchy boyfriend fit, Jimmy Jimmy, and ultra-skinnies, Edgemont.

VISIT PAIGE

Turpan

We’re obsessed with this minimalist-chic shop at the center of the Country Mart. Turpan has curated the perfect collection of life’s absolute essentials, all with such stylish simplicity, we’ve become fixated. Think leather-wrapped glass carafes, Japanese vessels for kitchen and travel, durable totes – even a surprisingly chic black rubber and wood broom. Everything in the shop is functional, but quietly glamorous.

Must-have: Browse for goodies like Rodin lip balm and perfume, Cire Trudon candles – and that broom!

VISIT TURPAN

A Votre Sante

This cottage draped in bougenvilla houses some of our favorite salads in the city. The perfect casual lunch stop, A Votre Sante is a top choice for many of our LA-dwelling Guest Editors and provides a cozy backdrop for a friendly get-together with loved ones. Healthy, but homey too, this is the kind of food we’ll never stop craving.

Must have: Go for their quinoa-covered kale or seared tuna salad for a satisfying, balanced lunch that’s not too heavy.

VISIT A VOTRE SANTE

Vicente Foods

Groceries packed in a red and white striped bag mean one thing in this part of town: Vicente Foods. Family-owned since 1948, this upscale market on the corner of San Vicente and Bundy is one of Brentwood’s lasting small business successes. The family is passionate about community involvement and the store remains virtually unchanged since its 1962 grand reopening. A stroll through Vicente Foods provides us with a throw-back experience and always a few fun new finds.

Must-have: Grab a fresh cookie from their old-fashioned, in-house bakery while you’re browsing the aisles. Just trust us on this one.
